Reading the Table Before You Read the Cards

Many players sit down and immediately focus on their own two cards. They forget that poker is a game of information, not just luck. The table itself tells a story long before the showdown arrives. Watching how people sit, breathe, and handle their chips can reveal a lot. A patient observer often learns more than an aggressive bettor.

Start by tracking who plays many hands and who folds quickly. Notice how each player reacts when the action reaches them. Some people become chatty, while others grow quiet and still. These small signals are not proof of anything, but they are clues. Over time, these clues form patterns you can use in your thinking.

Reading the table is a skill that improves with practice. You do not need to memorize every detail at once. Pick one thing to observe each session, such as betting speed or posture. Write down what you noticed afterward and compare it to future games. Slowly, the picture becomes clearer and your decisions feel more grounded.
